The three most popular routes are:
The Sella Mule Pass, which takes you to the beautiful town of Sella, a popular area for rock climbers with bolted climbing routes. Surrounded by pine forests, this beautiful route takes you past some of these impressive limestone rock faces frequented by climbers, then along a steep path with a rock face on either side, which was once used as a mule path. Every Tuesday morning, route takes approximately 3 + hours.
The Sierra Bernia Fort Walk covers the iconic Sierra Beria ridge located behind Altea. The walk includes a visit to a fort, constructed in 1526 under the reign of Felipe II and used as a look out post against Berber pirate attacks. With an altitude of 803 metres it was easy to guard the coast line from the Cape La Nao in Javea right up to the Port of Alicante.
You can also marvel at nature’s work when you discover the tunnel eroded over time into the rock. The views are impressive, you can see the sea, the Sierra Helada mountain, Altea and Benidorm and on a clear day you can even see Ibiza. Every Monday, Thursday and Saturday morning, the route takes approximately 3 - 3:30 hours.
The Guadalest Reservoir Circuit is another beautiful easy paced walk which starts at the dam. There are amazing views of the valley, the River Guadalest and of the Moorish village perched on a hill top and steeped in history. Guadalest has survived earthquakes and bombs to earn the classification of a Historic and Artistic Monument. Every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday morning, route takes approximately 3 + hours.
The other routes are more challenging ranging from 4 to 6 hours long and include:
Puig Campana is the second highest mountain on the Costa Blanca after the Sierra Aitana which sits just behind it. This route is a “must do” , with breathtaking scenery and natural fountains.. The trail takes you from the Font Moli in Finestrat, around the base of the Puig Campana mountain, then up to the summit and back down again. Nature at its best!
El Castellet to Finestrat and the Font Moli walk starts from El Castellet, close to the village of Polop and winds through the valley with spectacular views along the route! The circuit continues on to the Puig Campana and then Finestrat. This walk will not disappoint you!
The Sierra Gelada Nature Park walk begins in Albir, spectacular cliffs and the beauty of the blue Mediterranean sea accompany you on one side along the route and the villages of Benidorm, Altea & Albir on the other. Classified as a Nature Reserve in 2005, the trail takes you along the ridge, past ochre mines and fossilized sand dunes, through the nature reserve up to the cross in Benidorm. This route is very popular with tourist because of its easy access and the spectular views from the cross.
We recommend that all walkers wear hiking boots or strong trainers for the routes, that you take at least 2 liters of water per person to stay hydrated and a packed lunch. We also advise you to wear appropriate clothing depending on the season and weather conditions.
